When I’m truly hungry and need a substantial meal, feijoada is my absolute go-to. It’s rich, flavorful, and makes me feel completely satisfied.

Hearty Brazilian Feijoada

2 hours (plus soaking time) • Hard

Ingredients

  • 1 cup black beans, soaked overnight
  • 1 lb smoked sausage, sliced
  • 1/2 lb pork ribs, cut into pieces
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 bay leaf
  • Water or beef broth
  • Cooked rice for serving

Steps

  1. Drain soaked beans. In a large pot, combine beans, sausage, pork ribs, onion, garlic, bay leaf, and enough water/broth to cover.
  2. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 1.5-2 hours, or until beans and meats are tender. Stir occasionally.
  3. Remove some beans and mash them, then return to the pot to thicken the stew. Adjust seasoning.
  4. Serve hot with white rice.
