After a long week, settling down with a warm bowl of Dal Tadka and rice just feels right. It’s simple, flavorful, and incredibly comforting. Makes me feel perfectly content.

Simple Dal Tadka

40 minutes • Easy

Ingredients

  • 1 cup toor dal
  • 3 cups water
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tbsp ghee or oil
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 green chili, chopped
  • 1/2 tsp red chili powder
  • Fresh cilantro for garnish

Steps

  1. Wash dal and cook with water and turmeric in a pressure cooker or pot until soft.
  2. In a separate pan, heat ghee/oil. Add cumin seeds, then onion, garlic, and green chili; sauté until golden.
  3. Stir in red chili powder, then immediately add the cooked dal. Simmer for 5 minutes.
  4. Garnish with fresh cilantro and serve hot with rice or roti.
