After a long and tiring week, nothing re-energizes me and soothes my soul like a comforting bowl of dal tadka with fluffy rice. It’s simple, wholesome, and utterly delicious.
Simple Dal Tadka
Ingredients
- 1 cup split pigeon peas (Toor dal)
- 3 cups water
- 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1 tablespoon ghee or oil
- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 tomatoes, chopped
- 2 green chilies, slit (optional)
- 1 tablespoon ginger-garlic paste
- Salt to taste
- Fresh coriander for garnish
Steps
- Wash dal thoroughly and pressure cook with water and turmeric powder for 3-4 whistles, or until soft. Mash lightly.
- In a separate pan, heat ghee/oil. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter. Add chopped onion and sauté until golden.
- Add ginger-garlic paste and green chilies, cook for a minute. Add chopped tomatoes and cook until soft.
- Pour the cooked dal into the tempering. Add salt, bring to a simmer for 5 minutes. Garnish with fresh coriander and serve hot with rice.
