For every happy occasion or whenever I want to treat myself, I always reach for gulab jamun. Those sweet, syrupy balls just scream celebration to me!

Sweet Gulab Jamun (Simplified)

Ingredients

  • 1 cup milk powder
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 tsp baking soda
  • 2 tbsp ghee (clarified butter), melted
  • Milk, as needed to knead
  • Oil for deep frying
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/4 tsp cardamom powder

Steps

  1. For dough: Mix milk powder, flour, baking soda. Add ghee and knead with milk until a smooth, soft dough forms. Make small, smooth balls.
  2. For syrup: Combine sugar, water, and cardamom powder in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then simmer for 5 minutes until slightly sticky. Keep warm.
  3. Heat oil in a deep pan over medium-low heat. Fry gulab jamun balls until golden brown, turning frequently. Drain excess oil.
  4. Immediately transfer fried gulab jamun to the warm sugar syrup. Let them soak for at least 20 minutes before serving.
