There’s something so satisfying about a perfectly grilled bratwurst with sauerkraut on a cool evening. It just makes me feel content and at home.

Bratwurst with Sauerkraut & Onions

25 minutes • Easy

Ingredients

  • 4 raw bratwurst sausages
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 1 (16 oz) can sauerkraut, drained and rinsed
  • 1/2 cup beer or chicken broth
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Crusty rolls for serving (optional)

Steps

  1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add sliced onion and cook until softened and lightly caramelized, about 8-10 minutes.
  2. Add sauerkraut and beer (or broth) to the skillet. Bring to a simmer, then reduce heat and cook, covered, for 10 minutes.
  3. While sauerkraut simmers, cook bratwurst either by grilling, pan-frying, or boiling, until cooked through and nicely browned (about 10-15 minutes).
  4. Season sauerkraut with salt and pepper. Serve bratwurst over the warm sauerkraut, optionally in a crusty roll.
