Comforting French Onion Soup
Ingredients
- 3 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
- 2 tbsp butter
- 1 tsp sugar
- 4 cups beef broth
- 1/2 cup dry white wine or sherry
- 4 slices baguette, toasted
- 1 cup grated Gruyere cheese
- Salt and pepper to taste
Steps
- In a large pot, melt butter over medium-low heat. Add sliced onions and sugar, cook slowly for 30-40 minutes until deeply caramelized.
- Stir in wine or sherry and cook for 2-3 minutes. Pour in beef broth, bring to a simmer, and cook for 15-20 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.
- Ladle soup into oven-safe bowls. Top each with a toasted baguette slice and a generous amount of Gruyere cheese.
