When it’s time for ‘fika’ (coffee break), a warm, freshly baked cinnamon bun is essential. The smell alone brings such a cozy and happy feeling. It’s the perfect treat to slow down and enjoy the moment.

Swedish Cinnamon Buns (Kanelbullar)

2 hours (includes rising) • Medium

Ingredients

  • 1 cup warm milk
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 packet active dry yeast
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 cup softened butter
  • Cinnamon-sugar mixture
  • Pearl sugar for topping

Steps

  1. Combine milk, sugar, and yeast; let sit 5 minutes. Add flour, salt, and butter; knead until smooth. Let rise 1 hour.
  2. Roll dough into a rectangle. Spread with softened butter and sprinkle with cinnamon-sugar.
  3. Roll up tightly, slice into 1-inch pieces. Place on baking sheet and let rise 30 minutes.
  4. Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 12-15 minutes until golden. Brush with melted butter and sprinkle with pearl sugar.
