Every time I have shepherd’s pie, I’m reminded of my mum’s cooking and feel incredibly grateful. It’s a simple, hearty meal that always brings warmth to my heart and home.

Hearty Classic Shepherd's Pie

1 hour 15 minutes • Medium

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 lb ground lamb or beef
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 carrots, diced
  • 1 cup frozen peas
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 4 large potatoes, peeled and quartered
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Steps

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Heat olive oil in a large oven-safe skillet. Brown ground meat; drain fat. Add onion and carrots; cook until softened. Stir in peas, beef broth, and Worcestershire sauce. Simmer for 10 minutes until sauce thickens slightly.
  3. While meat mixture simmers, boil potatoes until very tender. Drain, then mash with milk, butter, salt, and pepper until smooth.
  4. Spread mashed potatoes evenly over the meat mixture in the skillet. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until topping is golden brown and filling is bubbling.
