On a reflective afternoon, baking a fresh loaf of soda bread is so simple yet deeply satisfying. It pairs perfectly with a cup of tea and quiet thoughts.
Traditional Irish Soda Bread
Ingredients
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tbsp granulated sugar (optional)
- 1 3/4 cups buttermilk
Steps
- Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). Lightly flour a baking sheet.
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, salt, and sugar (if using).
- Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and pour in the buttermilk. Mix with your hands or a wooden spoon until just combined into a shaggy dough. Do not overmix.
- Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and gently form into a round loaf, about 7-8 inches in diameter. Place on the prepared baking sheet.
- Using a sharp knife, cut a deep cross into the top of the loaf. Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until golden brown and hollow-sounding when tapped on the bottom. Cool on a wire rack.
