A sunny day by the coast or even just a good mood calls for one thing for me: classic fish and chips! It’s simple joy in every bite.
Homemade Fish and Chips
Ingredients
- 4 cod or haddock fillets (about 6 oz each)
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 cup cold lager or sparkling water
- Vegetable oil for frying
- 2 large potatoes, cut into thick fries
Steps
- Heat oil in a deep pot or fryer to 350°F (175°C).
- Fry potato chips in batches until golden and crisp, about 5-7 minutes. Remove and season with salt.
- For the batter, whisk together flour, baking powder, salt, and cold lager until smooth.
- Dip fish fillets into the batter, ensuring they are fully coated. Carefully lower into the hot oil.
- Fry fish for 5-8 minutes, turning once, until golden brown and cooked through. Serve immediately with chips.
