Classic Plain Scones
Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tbsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 cup (1 stick) cold unsalted butter, cubed
- 1 large egg
- 1/2 cup milk
- Optional: clotted cream and jam for serving
Steps
- Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Cut in the cold butter with a pastry blender or your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- In a separate small bowl, whisk together the egg and milk. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined and a soft dough forms.
- Turn dough onto a lightly floured surface. Gently pat or roll to about 3/4-inch thickness. Cut out scones using a 2-inch round cutter.
- Place scones on the prepared baking sheet. Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown. Let cool slightly before serving with clotted cream and jam.
