After a long and tiring week, nothing re-energizes me and soothes my soul like a comforting bowl of dal tadka with fluffy rice. It’s simple, wholesome, and utterly delicious.

Simple Dal Tadka

40 minutes • Easy

Ingredients

  • 1 cup split pigeon peas (Toor dal)
  • 3 cups water
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 tablespoon ghee or oil
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tomatoes, chopped
  • 2 green chilies, slit (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon ginger-garlic paste
  • Salt to taste
  • Fresh coriander for garnish

Steps

  1. Wash dal thoroughly and pressure cook with water and turmeric powder for 3-4 whistles, or until soft. Mash lightly.
  2. In a separate pan, heat ghee/oil. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter. Add chopped onion and sauté until golden.
  3. Add ginger-garlic paste and green chilies, cook for a minute. Add chopped tomatoes and cook until soft.
  4. Pour the cooked dal into the tempering. Add salt, bring to a simmer for 5 minutes. Garnish with fresh coriander and serve hot with rice.
