There’s nothing more peaceful than enjoying a warm cup of herbal tea with a freshly baked scone. It’s a quiet moment of bliss that slows down my busy day.

Classic Plain Scones

30 minutes • Easy

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) cold unsalted butter, cubed
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • Optional: clotted cream and jam for serving

Steps

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Cut in the cold butter with a pastry blender or your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. In a separate small bowl, whisk together the egg and milk. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined and a soft dough forms.
  4. Turn dough onto a lightly floured surface. Gently pat or roll to about 3/4-inch thickness. Cut out scones using a 2-inch round cutter.
  5. Place scones on the prepared baking sheet. Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown. Let cool slightly before serving with clotted cream and jam.
