Authentic Margherita Pizza

1 hour (plus dough proofing) • Medium

Ingredients

  • 1 lb pizza dough (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1/2 cup San Marzano tomato sauce
  • 4 oz fresh mozzarella, torn or sliced
  • Fresh basil leaves
  • 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • Pinch of salt

Steps

  1. Preheat oven with a pizza stone or steel to its highest temperature (500-550°F / 260-290°C) for at least 30 minutes.
  2. Stretch or roll pizza dough into a 10-12 inch circle. Transfer to a lightly floured pizza peel or parchment paper.
  3. Spread tomato sauce evenly over the dough, leaving a border. Distribute mozzarella over the sauce.
  4. Carefully slide pizza onto the hot stone/steel. Bake for 8-12 minutes, or until crust is golden and cheese is bubbly. Remove from oven.
  5. Top with fresh basil leaves, a drizzle of olive oil, and a pinch of salt. Slice and serve immediately.
