Whenever I’m feeling a bit low, a warm bowl of dal makes me feel hopeful and nourished. It’s a simple, wholesome dish that always lifts my spirits.
Comforting Yellow Dal
Ingredients
- 1 cup split yellow lentils (moong dal or toor dal)
- 3 cups water
- 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
- 1 tbsp ghee or oil
- 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
- 1 small onion, chopped
- 1 tomato, chopped
- Salt to taste
Steps
- Rinse lentils. Combine lentils, water, and turmeric in a pot. Bring to a boil, then simmer for 20-25 minutes until lentils are soft.
- In a separate small pan, heat ghee/oil. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter. Add onion and cook until golden.
- Add chopped tomato and cook until soft. Pour this mixture (tadka) into the cooked dal.
- Stir well, add salt, and simmer for another 5 minutes. Serve hot with rice or bread.
