Whenever I’m feeling a bit low, a warm bowl of dal makes me feel hopeful and nourished. It’s a simple, wholesome dish that always lifts my spirits.

Comforting Yellow Dal

45 minutes • Easy

Ingredients

  • 1 cup split yellow lentils (moong dal or toor dal)
  • 3 cups water
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tbsp ghee or oil
  • 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 1 tomato, chopped
  • Salt to taste

Steps

  1. Rinse lentils. Combine lentils, water, and turmeric in a pot. Bring to a boil, then simmer for 20-25 minutes until lentils are soft.
  2. In a separate small pan, heat ghee/oil. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter. Add onion and cook until golden.
  3. Add chopped tomato and cook until soft. Pour this mixture (tadka) into the cooked dal.
  4. Stir well, add salt, and simmer for another 5 minutes. Serve hot with rice or bread.
